What's On My Hook?

  • I'm working on an order of 2 ballerina cats. The first one is white and the second will be gray. These are the cats who they will be based off of.

  •  I'm also making something for myself. I'm holding off on the vest because I decided I needed a slouch hat for this weekend's camping trip. Here's the pattern I'm using: Moogly Blog: Moroccan Midnight Slouch Hat. I love the colors in the variegated yarn. I think I will use the same colors in the vest.

Projects not started:
-The gray ballerina cat.
-A doll
-A ballerina elephant:
this order just came in so I need to find a pattern.

Good Bye 2014, Hello 2015!!

It's that time again! Time to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new year. I like to say goodbye to the old year by reminiscing.

In 2014:
  • We begun the new year will lots of new life in our little suburban homestead ...and more in February! ...and more later in the year that I didn't blog about, including hatching eggs under a broody hen for the first time.
  • I focused on my crafty side and opened up my Etsy shop: Made by Mama Dani
  • I started the year having just lost a few daycare kiddos but have ended the year with a full house and a nice wait list for my home daycare.
  • We said goodbye to our beloved Dachshund Annabelle.
  • And said hello to a little firecracker Boomer.
  • We started a new school year with Sean in the 1st grade and Maddy in kindergarten.
  • I brought back Fun Lunches for the kids.
  • The kids had a fun and busy year with Maddy continuing dance, Sean continuing soccer, and Sean starting scouts, and we all started going swimming at the ymca: update post #1 and update post #2
  • Maddy turned 5, Sean turned 7 and Emily turned 3 this year. ...my my have they been growing!
  • Richard and I celebrated 8 years of marriage!
  • I became serious about bettering myself. I logged my food and made better choices. I worked out regularly with cardio, weight lifting, swimming, and yoga. I've lost about 14 lbs!

Onto the new year! My intentions for 2015:
  • As cliche as this is, I plan to continue working at bettering myself. I will work on the last 20-30 lbs I want to lose. I will continue to make good food choices. I will continue to work on making exercise part of my routine. I plan to lift weights 2-3 times a week, have regular swim time with the family, and regularly practice yoga. Join me on my facebook group Girls Rule {Boys Drool} Fitness and/or on MyFitnessPal
  • I will be beginning the year with 30 days of Yoga with Yoga with Adriene. I'm going to give morning yoga a shot, wake up and get on the mat before I do anything.
  • I will find more time to read. I am working on Wicked and then plan to read the other 3 books in the series.
  • I will learn more sign language and share it with the children I care for. I will start this with one of my Christmas gifts this year: Sign to Learn: American Sign Language in the Early Childhood Classroom
  • I will expand my butterfly garden this spring. I need to add more nectar plants to attract more butterflies and need to replenish the Milkweed that did not return this year.
  • I need to remember to write down all the cute kid moments I want to remember years from now: with my Kids Say series
  • And lastly, I will continue with my creative outlet: knitting and crocheting. I have started a stack of crocheted granny squares. My goal is to continue at least 1 square a day until I have enough for a patchwork blanket for myself.

New Product Announcement: Headbands

Today I added a few new products on my Etsy shop: Made By Mama Dani. I now have knitted headbands for sale. These are fun to make. I have a green headband with a pink and brown flower, and a purple/blue headband with a white and blue flower up for sale. I also made a listing for custom made headbands. You pick the color of the headband, the flower, and the button, and tell me the size you need. The blue/white/yellow headband at the bottom was made for Maddy. I need to make another for her because she was upset when I told her I was making the other headbands to sell. She loves her accessories!!

The Big Announcement!

I'm so excited to make this post tonight. The big announcement is... I have opened up an etsy shop! I've been working on it for a little while now and today I opened the doors to Made By Mama Dani. I decided to open Made By Mama Dani to help fund my craft hobby and to supplement my home daycare business income, especially during times like now when I have openings. Currently I have a few hats and some soaps (goats milk and shea butter, both scented with essential oils). I will definitely be adding other knitted products; I'm starting on one tonight! I also have some ideas for other items to make. I can't wait to make them all and then blog about them here!

Here's a look at my current listings:
My hats:
I love making these. They are the perfect craft for when I'm sitting around watching tv.

I have recently fallen in love with essential oils so I thought, why not make soap with them! I plan on getting some other molds though. The flower/leaf ones are a hard plastic that makes getting the soap out difficult. I want to get some silicone molds like the one I used for the mini soaps.

So, there you have it! I hope you take a moment to check out Made By Mama Dani, share it with your friends, and maybe find something you like!

DIY Door Snake

As it has gotten colder, I've noticed that our front door is a little drafty. I wanted to get a door snake to keep the cold air out. Then I thought, why spend money on one when I can make one. So I did! I used scraps from the sheets I used to make the kids' ghosts costumes, some buttons and ribbon I had laying around the house and stuffed it will plastic grocery bags that have been reproducing in the pantry. Lastly, I let the kids decorate it.

Here he is!

DIY Window Decorations: Fall

I'm behind on posting but better late than never, right!? We have a huge picture window in our livingroom. In the past we've used it to display some of the kids art work but I wanted to do something bigger. So, we made a mural! The inspiration came from the Tissue Paper Stained Glass project that Dilly-Dali Art did.

It started with just the kids putting scraps of tissue paper on the bottom of the window. Then I made the tree trunk and the top of the tree and the kids finished it with the falling leaves.

It was beautiful from the inside during the day.

And just as pretty from the outside at night.

We took it down when the Christmas decorations went up and I'm already brain storming on the winter mural we'll do when the Christmas decorations come down.

School Days: Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner so we spent the last 2 weeks decorating the house. The best part about all the decorations is they didn't cost us a dime to make. We had everything already laying around the house and a lot of the supplies are recycled materials. Here's what we did:

One of my favorites is our door decoration. I took a black trash bag (that someone gave us hand-me-downs in none the less), and cut the draw string off and cut the sides to make it flat. The kids then added lots of white hand prints. I finished it off with "Happy Halloween" in orange pant.

Another area of the house that we like to decorate is the big picture window. We combined the coffee filter spider webs from The Artful Parent and egg carton spiders to create these. They really look neat from the outside at night with the lights shinning through the shear curtains we have.

These little ghosts were great scissor practice for the kids. They are just tissues with fringes cut around the edges. The heads are just cotton balls tied into place with spooky faces drawn on too.

The kids are being ghosts for this Halloween so Sean and I used the left over fabric to make these mummies.

Last but not least, Moms Like Me's post were the inspiration for our bats.

What are you doing to get ready for Halloween?

Yarn Dolls

The kids have new homemade dolls today....yarn dolls. They were so easy to make and they didn't take much time at all. I did most of them while the kids had snack and finished them up during lunch. ;) I just wish I had more choices of yarn; I only had the two kinds in the house. I can always make more!
Aren't they cute!?
The tutorial can be found over at Wee Folk Art.

Maddy wanted to nap with hers. Sean made his into an airplane.

Thank you The Chocolate Muffin Tree for sharing this idea!
